Getting Your Windows 10 Till Back Online

A step-by-step guide for after you change your broadband or router

Your till was set up with a fixed network address that matched your old broadband router. When you change provider, the new router normally hands out addresses in a different range — so the till’s old address no longer fits and it can’t get on the internet. Your till needs that internet connection to work properly, including reaching your online back office. The fix is simply to let the new router give the till its address automatically. It only takes a few minutes, and the steps below walk you through it.

Before you start: This is a quick job you can do yourself in a few minutes — no engineer visit needed. You’ll be tapping a few Windows menus behind the till software, but you can’t break anything by following these steps. Take your time, do one step at a time, and check each one against its picture before moving on.

Part 1 – Get out to the Windows desktop

1. Sign off, then tap SETTINGS

First make sure no one is signed in and a sale isn’t in progress (sign off if needed). From the main TouchPoint screen, tap the SETTINGS button.

The TouchPoint home screen – tap SETTINGS.

2. Enter the code 88888888

A keypad will appear. Type 88888888 (the number eight, eight times) and tap ENTER. This isn’t a login — it simply unlocks TouchPoint’s hidden menu.

Type 88888888 on the keypad and tap ENTER.

3. Choose “Minimise TouchPoint”

A list of Hidden Functions opens. Use the down arrow to scroll until you see 8. Minimise TouchPoint. Tap it once so it is highlighted in blue, then tap OK. The till software will tuck away and you’ll see the normal Windows desktop behind it.

Scroll to “8. Minimise TouchPoint” and tap OK.

Part 2 – Open the network settings

4. Find the network icon (bottom-right)

Look at the bottom-right corner of the screen, near the clock. You’ll see a small network icon — most likely the little computer/ethernet symbol with a yellow warning triangle on it (that’s the till telling you it’s connected to the router but can’t get online). Press and hold on that icon, then tap Open Network and Sharing Center.

Press and hold the network icon, then tap “Open Network and Sharing Center”.

5. Open “Change adapter settings”

A window titled Network and Sharing Center opens. On the left-hand side you’ll see a short list of links. Tap Change adapter settings.

On the left, tap “Change adapter settings”.

6. Open the Ethernet connection’s Properties

You’ll now see your network connection — usually called Ethernet (it may have a number after it). Press and hold on it, and a small menu appears. Tap Properties at the bottom of that menu.

Press and hold the Ethernet connection, then tap Properties.

Part 3 – Switch the address back to automatic

7. Select “Internet Protocol Version 4”

In the list in the middle of the window, find the line that reads Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Tap it once so it’s highlighted, then tap the Properties button just below the list.

Highlight “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and tap Properties.

8. Set both options to “automatically”

This is the important bit. The boxes are most likely set to Use the following IP address with numbers typed in — those are the old settings that no longer match your new router. Tap the circles to change them to:

  • Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Obtain DNS server address automatically
Then tap OK. Tap OK (or Close) on the window behind it too.

Set both options to “obtain … automatically”, then tap OK.

Part 4 – Restart the till to finish

9. Restart Windows

The simplest way to make sure everything reconnects cleanly is a quick restart. Tap the Windows button in the bottom-left corner, tap the Power icon, then tap Restart. The till will reboot and TouchPoint will open again on its own — this time picking up its new address from your router.

Windows button → Power → Restart.

How you’ll know it worked: once the till has restarted, the yellow warning triangle on the network icon should be gone and the till is back online. Open your online back office to confirm your data is syncing again.
Still not connecting? Don’t worry, and don’t keep changing other settings. The most common cause is one of the two boxes in Step 8 being missed — go back into Internet Protocol Version 4 and make sure both options are set to “automatically”, tap OK, then restart the till once more (Step 9). That puts it right in almost every case.
